Microsoft Corporation is an American multinational technology corporation producing computer software, consumer electronics, personal computers, and related services headquartered at the Microsoft Redmond campus located in Redmond, Washington, United States.

Action in the open-source world[]

Microsoft used to be a typical closed-source example for decades.

Since 2014, Microsoft started to participate in various open-source projects. Meanwhile, many of Microsoft's software (except its flagship projects like Windows and Office) have become open-source.

In 2018, Microsoft was the largest code contributor on GitHub. Also, in the same year, Microsoft acquired GitHub for $7.5 Billion.

Linux Kernel[]

Microsoft also supports Linux Kernel's development since recent years. Linus Torvalds, creator of the Linux Kernel, even said:

"The whole anti-Microsoft thing was sometimes funny as a joke, but not really. Today, they're actually much friendlier. I talk to Microsoft engineers at various conferences, and I feel like, yes, they have changed, and the engineers are happy. And they're like really happy working on Linux. So I completely dismissed all the anti-Microsoft stuff."
