GNU Backgammon is software for playing and analyzing backgammon games. It is based on artificial neural networks and plays at or above the level of the top human players in the world. GNU Backgammon is written in C, uses a GTK interface, and is compatible with Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.

GNU Backgammon features a text-based interface, as well as two-dimensional and three-dimensional graphic boards, allowing users to play and study games on a variety of platforms and configurations.

The software includes a number of tools to help players improve their skills:

  • A tutor mode, which warns players of doubtful moves and poor doubling cube decisions
  • An extensive rollout interface, allowing the evaluation of moves and cube decisions over thousands of games automatically
  • Options for making detailed analyses of games, matches, and money sessions
  • Facilities for importing saved matches from a variety of online backgammon services for analysis and review
