Free Software is software that is licensed under a Free Software License. Richard Stallman started the Free Software Foundation to promote free software and the GPL License.

The term Free Software caused confusion in the business community as it lead many to believe that the resulting software could not be charged for. So a large part of the Free Software Community decided to use the term Open Source instead. This is seen as a turning point in the open source movment as more businesses became involved and the community become centered more around Linux than the Free Software Foundation.
